My view on starting in academia
This page collects a few links and ideas:
Read papers
In your research field, but also in a slightly more diverse area.
A good place to find new papers, for instance in stat, is on arxiv: https://arxiv.org/list/stat/recent There are new ones every week day!
Another very good place to find great papers is on journal webpages; the advantage over arxiv is that they are filtered through the publication process.
Try this top best in stats (some are very theoretical though, it is a question of taste)
In ML, try the same with the best ML conferences:
NeurIPS
ICML
ICLR
etc
Yet another place to find new papers is on Twitter: follow leader in your field; they will let you know when they have fresh papers out, or any other related info.
Being visible
Meet with people: attend reading groups, seminars, conferences. Talk with people.
Create a personal website. Simple templates include github or Google Site; see also this tutorial for a Python/Pelican webpage: https://speakerdeck.com/himito/creating-static-sites-with-pelican
Create account on academic social media such as Twitter, ResearchGate, GoogleScholar, LinkedIn, etc...
Write a blog, through github of WordPress. I've started this one when I was a PhD student with fellow PhD students: https://statisfaction.wordpress.com/
